Introduction

This article shows how to easily load the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) registry office map data published by the G-Spatial Information Center into QGIS with the MOJXML Loader plugin released by MIERUNE. The method is also covered in a video, so watch it for detailed steps.

Status of registry office map preparation

Some registry office map data is prepared in an arbitrary coordinate system, so not all of the data overlays neatly on a map. First, check whether the data for the area you want to use is prepared in the Japan Plane Rectangular Coordinate System. Data prepared in this system often follows the progress of cadastral surveys, so start by checking on the “Cadastral Survey Website” whether data for your area has been prepared.

Downloading registry office map data

Downloading the data requires an account at the G-Spatial Information Center, so first create an account on the G-Spatial Information Center's new user registration page.

When the account is ready, search for the data for the municipality you want and download it. Download the data from this page.

Installing the plugin

From the menu bar, choose Plugins → Manage and Install Plugins. The Plugins dialog (the QGIS plugin repository) opens. Select the All tab on the left, enter MOJXML Loader in the search field, and click Install Plugin at the bottom to install the plugin.

Using the plugin

After the installation finishes, choose Processing → Toolbox from the menu bar to open the Processing Toolbox. At the bottom of the Processing Toolbox, click MOJ Registry Office Map Data (法務省登記所備付地図データ) → Load Map XML/ZIP (地図XML/ZIPを読み込む) to open the plugin's dialog.

You can also edit the following settings for the conversion.

  • Check Include arbitrary coordinate system data (任意座標系のデータを含める) to include data in arbitrary coordinates in the conversion.
  • Check Include outside-district and separate-drawing data (地区外・別図を含める) to include data outside the target district in the conversion (normally not used).
  • With Output file, you can choose the destination and the output format of the file. If you do not specify a destination, the data is output as a temporary layer.
  • By default, Open output file after running algorithm is checked, so when the conversion finishes, the data is added to the map canvas automatically.

After setting the conversion options, click the Run button to start the conversion. The registry office map data is converted to the format specified in Output file.

Conclusion

Bringing registry office map data into QGIS makes it possible to analyze and process it together with other data. You can use it to check the lot numbers involved in a real estate transaction, or as reference material for land acquisition in infrastructure construction.
